LOCATIONS

Port O’Connor is located on the central Texas coast with access to three different bay systems. No matter the wind, currents or tide, there is always an opportunity to catch a trophy fish.

ESPIRITU SANTO BAY

This is our main bay, right out front of POC. It has something to offer throughout the year. It is home to the beautiful Schoalwater Bay, Pringle Lake, Mule Slough, Big Pocket, Grass Island, Lighthouse, and Fishpond. With options like coves, creeks, channels, islands, mangroves, marshes, grass flats, mud flats, sand bars, reefs, deep and shallow. There are so many cool spots that it will keep you coming back to explore new areas each year.

Cooley knows what areas are best during certain tides and seasons. Just let him know what you would like to catch and how you’d like to fish.

WEST MATAGORDA BAY

Another major bay system right out in front of Port O’Connor. This bay is well known for the historic Pass Cavallo and the Matagorda Jetty Bull Reds. Pass Cavallo is a natural inlet on Matagorda Island that natives, explorers, and settlers have used for hundreds of years. It is only access by boat which keeps a private relaxing setting for beach goers. This is a fantastic way to end the summer day and cool off. But this is a fishing trip, Capt. Cooley will always have a rod out. This is one of the best spots to get a chance at a shark or tarpon.

The Matagorda Jetties are known for their year-round chance to get big Bull Reds. Some months can be truly breath taking with the numbers fish using this jetty. The Schools of Bull Reds, Sharks, Jack Crevalle, Mackerel and Tarpon can all be found boiling on topwater. When it is “on fire,” we will have to make a stop at the Jetty.

However, the reason Cooley loves Matagorda Bay is the grassy marshes of Matagorda Island. The island offers completely different scenery compared to Espiritu Santo. It has excellent fly and wade fishing areas. We just need to watch the weather because this bay could get rough. That just makes it more special when we get to fish here. The beach and jetty are close access to Espiritu Santo Bay and always an option throughout the year.

SAN ANTONIO BAY

Can you believe there is another big bay within range for a day of fishing in POC? This is where the Guadalupe River meets the bay. There are many oyster reefs, shorelines, mangrove lagoons and marshes. This is where we are most likely to get a glimpse of a giant Alligator or a Whooping Crane. The Black Duck and Ultra Cat can get us to the back lakes where we could be the only boat around.

You may hear an airboat or two but, for the most part, the spots are secluded and quiet. The beautiful nature is just a bonus to the reds and trout we will be catching. Making the run to San Antonio Bay can be done from Froggies in POC. However, we may choose to launch at Charlie’s closer to Seadrift, especially on the skiff.
